Shawn Williams is a native Louisvillian who left to work in Washington, D.C., but then came back to her hometown several years later with her family and fell in love with Old Louisville. She says: “We restored one of the historic homes on Belgravia Court and love the history, beauty and energy of this community.”
Describe Louisville’s spirit: Generous, creative and down-home comfort.
Must-do Louisville experiences: Take a guided tour of historic Old Louisville. The neighborhood has the largest collection of Victorian mansions in the United States. The houses, gardens and walking courts are a wonderful step back into another era. Talk to a few of the neighbors – they know a lot about their houses and the area and are always happy to talk to visitors.
Favorite local festivals and events: Garvin Gate Blues Festival is the most fun you can have listening to music and dancing in the street in October (and maybe add a little Bourbon!). The St. James Court Art Show the first weekend in October is very cool – art, food, great architecture. What’s not to love?
Go-to places to eat and drink: Buck’s Restaurant and Bar in Old Louisville. With its elegant white flowers on the bar and fabulous specialties such as the Crispy Fish with Hot Sweet Chili or the Fried Green Tomato BLT, it’s a can’t miss. Oh, and it’s on the Urban Bourbon Trail, too!
What do you love most about Louisville? I love the people the most. I spent 25 years away from home and I missed the gentle spirit, kindness and easy laughter, I am so glad I came home.
