4 Louisville Festivals Named Top Events for Winter Season

Reaffirms designation as a “World Festival & Event City”

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (December 15, 2011) – Supporting Louisville’s designation by the International Festivals and Events Association as one of the best places to host an event in North America, the Kentucky Travel Industry Association (KTIA), formerly the Kentucky Tourism Council, honored four events held in the city for their popularity and success.

KTIA has again the chosen Christmas at the Galt House Hotel, Festival of Trees and Lights, Humana Festival of New American Plays and Lights Under Louisville as four of the Top 10 Winter/Holiday Festivals and Events.

The KTIA Top 10 list is in the November issue of Kentucky Monthly and www.ktia.com. Judges decide the seasonal list based on nominations placed by KTIA members across Kentucky. Criteria for judging included popularity of the event, its impact on the local tourism economy as well as cultural and historical significance.

Festival of Trees and Lights – November 11-13, 2011

Celebrating its 22nd anniversary this year, the indoor gallery of the Louisville Slugger Field becomes a winter wonderland of events for an estimated 10,000 attendees in support of the Kosair Children’s Hospital. Local businesses and individuals sponsored hundreds of beautifully decorated trees, wreaths, and assorted greenery, the most unique of which are awarded and available for purchase. Visitors enjoy ongoing attractions such as traditional Kwanza, Christian, and Jewish celebrations and festive displays, shopping for holiday gifts and homemade delicacies, and attending fun family events such as Dickens Family Night. This is second year in a row that KTIA has recognized the Festival. More information: www.helpkosairchildrenshospital.com or 502.629.5437.

Christmas at the Galt House Hotel – November 17, 2011- January 2, 2012

Christmas at the Galt is a multi-layered celebration. Bigger and better this year is the KaLightoscope main attraction, a larger-than-life, lighted holiday sculpture, walk-through event handcrafted by 30 artisans from China. Made of sheer, painted fabrics, each tower sculpture (some as tall as 24 feet height) is enhanced by light, color and an imaginative setting. Visitors can stroll through the brand new, exciting Snowland Scene with ice skating snowmen, wander through the Christmas Tree Forest and then make their way through the Candy House or sign Santa’s naughty or nice scroll. As part of the KaLightoscope Christmas ticket package, you’ll also see the brand new Christmas Village with the Snow Fairy Castle attraction, the life-sized, fully edible World’s Largest Gingerbread Village and more. In addition, the Colors of the Season dinner show is packed with favorite holiday songs, dancing and laughter. During Christmas at the Galt, Santa hosts breakfasts, sits for photos and tells stories and artists and shopkeepers reveal their wares in the unique Mistletoe Marketplace. This is second year in a row that KTIA has recognized KaLighoscope. More information: www.ChristmasAtTheGaltHouse.com or 502.569.4473.

Lights Under Louisville – November 18, 2011-January 1, 2012

The Louisville MEGA Cavern is transformed into an underground holiday light spectacular for the Christmas season. Load up the kids and enjoy a 30-40 minute ride through 17 miles of underground passageways, which feature over 500 lit characters and 2,000,000 points of light. It’s the only underground light show of its kind on the planet. MEGA Cavern’s Lights Under Louisville allows the public to drive their own vehicle inside the cavern to experience this one-of-a-kind holiday transformation. It’s a great way to get your family in the mood this holiday season. This is second year in a row that KTIA has recognized Lights Under Louisville. 35th Annual Humana Festival of New American Plays – February 26–April 15, 2012

Held at Actors Theatre of Louisville, the Humana Festival of New American Plays celebrates the genius and diversity of contemporary playwrights by presenting a rotating repertory of up to seven new works that incorporate a wide spectrum of themes, theatrical forms and styles of dramatic literature. Theatre lovers flock to the Festival in hopes of discovering the next Pulitzer Prize winner, blockbuster film or Broadway hit. Weekend tourist packages and nearby hotel discounts are available.
