Derby Social Coming to Farmington with Special Cocktail

Derby Social features local chef competition, Copper & Kings’ Ride the Mule cocktail at Farmington Historic Plantation May 3 Annual garden party pairs live music with fine food and drink

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (April 18, 2016) - - - Farmington Historic Plantation and Copper & Kings American Brandy Co. present the Derby Social - a lively food, drink and music event Tuesday, May 3 from 6 to 10 p.m. At the updated pre-Derby party, local restaurants Royals Hot Chicken, Chef Maria’s Greek Deli, Fontleroy’s, Kingsley’s and Burning Bush Grille will compete for the best Kentucky Derby dish voted on by attendees and paired with Copper & Kings’ signature Ride the Mule™ cocktail. The Juggernaut Jug Band will perform live and local makers will sell their wares at an artisan market. The cost is $50 per person. All proceeds benefit Farmington Historic Plantation. Tickets are available online: farmingtonhistoricplantation.org.

“We hope to introduce a more informal, relaxed spirit to the Derby tradition. Teaming up with Copper & Kings to continue our popular pre-Derby gathering is a perfect fit,” said Farmington executive director Diane Carman-Young. “Pairing their uncommon Kentucky spirit with fresh ideas for race day dishes from top local chefs brings new life to our yearly celebration.”

The Derby Social will take place outside, rain or shine, in Farmington’s picturesque gardens on the vast plantation that has been part of Kentucky history since 1816, located at 3033 Bardstown Rd. Tastings from all chefs and Copper & Kings’ Ride the Mule™ cocktail are included in the ticket price. A cash bar will serve craft beer and wine.

Ride the Mule™, the NOT Official Drink of Derby, is a hassle-free, refreshing brandy cocktail created for springtime in Kentucky. Noted horse trainer Pat Parelli famously said, “a mule is just like a horse, but even more so.”

Ride the Mule™
2 ounces Copper & Kings immature brandy
.5 ounces lime juice
4 ounces Butchertown Soda ginger beer
Lime wheel and wedge

In a highball glass, muddle lime wheel at the bottom, avoiding the peel. Add brandy and ice. Top with ginger beer. Squeeze lime wedge on top and drop in glass.
