Louisville Welcomes Historic Air Canada Service Connecting Bourbon City to Toronto
New nonstop route marks SDF’s first major international passenger service; opens significant new tourism market for Louisville
LOUISVILLE, Ky. (October 16, 2026) — Louisville is taking a major step onto the international stage with the launch of new nonstop Air Canada service between Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport (SDF) and Toronto Pearson International Airport (YYZ), creating Louisville’s first regularly scheduled international passenger air service and welcoming a new airline to the market starting April 28, 2027.
The new route represents a significant milestone in Louisville’s continued growth as a visitor destination and creates a direct gateway between Bourbon City and one of North America’s largest metropolitan areas. It also gives Louisville access through Toronto to Air Canada’s extensive Canadian and global network. The seasonal summer service runs from late April through the end of October. Flights will operate four times weekly, increasing to daily service from June through September.
“Louisville is making history, and Air Canada is proud to be part of it. We are excited to add nonstop service between Louisville and Toronto, connecting customers to our global network through our Toronto hub, said Alexandre Lefevre, Vice President, Network Planning & Global Sales at Air Canada. “The new route will offer more convenient travel options for customers in both markets, and we look forward to welcoming them on board.”
For Louisville Tourism, the flight represents something more: the payoff from years of building demand for Louisville as a destination and demonstrating that tourism can help drive broader economic development.
“Tourism has helped put Louisville in front of audiences around the world, and this new international service is an important next step in that evolution,” said Cleo Battle, President & CEO of Louisville Tourism. “A nonstop flight doesn’t happen simply because a community wants one. It happens because there is demand and because partners are willing to come together and invest in the opportunity. We are especially grateful to Louisville Hotel Partnership (LHP) for its financial support of this route and its continued belief in the importance of growing Louisville’s visitor economy.”
Said Eamon O’Brien, LHP Chair, “The Louisville Hotel Partnership is proud to make a significant two-year financial commitment to help bring Louisville’s first international air service to our city. Air Canada is making a substantial investment in this market, and we’re proud to be a partner in helping launch and support a route that can drive incremental visitation, room nights and economic impact for Louisville.”
Battle also credited Louisville Muhammad Ali International Airport and Anthony Gilmer, Vice President of Air Service Development and Strategic Marketing, for their sustained work to secure the route.
“Anthony and the entire SDF team deserve tremendous credit for making this happen,” Battle said. “They have been incredibly strategic and persistent in building Louisville’s air service, developing relationships with carriers and making the business case for our city. Bringing a new airline into the market — and doing it with Louisville’s first international flight — is an extraordinary accomplishment.”
“Landing Air Canada and our first nonstop international service to Toronto is a game changer for SDF and a milestone moment for our community,” said Dan Mann, Executive Director of the Louisville Regional Airport Authority, which owns and operates SDF. “Toronto has long been one of our top targets, and this daily connection on a world-class global carrier links Louisville to one of North America’s most important economic hubs while opening a new pipeline of visitors to our city. We’re grateful to Air Canada for investing in Louisville, to our community for its continued support and especially to Louisville Tourism and the Louisville Hotel Partnership, whose efforts helped make this possible. Milestones like this happen because our region works together.”
Toronto has long been viewed as a priority market for Louisville, offering significant potential for inbound leisure, business and convention travel. The new nonstop service dramatically improves Louisville’s accessibility to Canadian travelers while opening new opportunities for Louisville Tourism to market the destination internationally.
Louisville’s visitor economy now generates approximately $4.4 billion in economic impact, with the destination’s appeal increasingly extending beyond its traditional regional drive market. Bourbon tourism, major conventions and sporting events, an expanding culinary scene and Louisville’s growing international profile have all contributed to increased demand for the destination.
“We’ve waited decades to have a regular international flight from a major carrier and some thought it would never happen, but today’s announcement by Air Canada shows confidence in our city’s growth and momentum,” said Louisville Mayor Craig Greenberg. “This regular non-stop flight to Toronto unites two multicultural cities that share elite culinary scenes, outstanding parks and amazing waterfronts, and I know this will create jobs and bring even more visitors to Louisville.”
The addition of Air Canada also expands the number of carriers serving SDF and comes amid a period of significant air service growth at the airport. SDF reached a record 41 nonstop destinations in 2026. For Louisville Tourism, the opportunity now turns to converting that access into visitation.
“This gives us something we have never had before — the ability to market Louisville in an international market and say, ‘You can get here nonstop,’” Battle said. “Toronto gives us an exciting new audience for Bourbon City, but just as importantly, this is proof of what tourism can deliver for Louisville. When we build demand for the destination, we help create the conditions for investments like this that benefit visitors, residents and businesses alike.”
