Louisville to Host 2028 Gymnastics U.S. Olympic Team Trials
Named ‘Gymnastics City USA 2028’
Louisville, KY (April 15, 2026) — Louisville will take center stage on the road to the LA28 Olympic Games when it hosts the 2028 U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Gymnastics, solidifying its role as Gymnastics City USA 2028.
Headlined by the Olympic Trials at KFC Yum! Center, the designation brings five of the sport’s most prestigious events to Louisville over 15 days, June 5–19, 2028, welcoming athletes, coaches, families and fans from across the globe to experience the city’s signature hospitality, culture and sports legacy.
Beginning June 5, 2028, the Kentucky International Convention Center will host a series of national competitions and events, including developmental competitions for the USA Gymnastics Championships—featuring rhythmic gymnastics, acrobatic gymnastics, and trampoline & tumbling—as well as Xcelebration, the USA Gymnastics National Congress and Trade Show, and USA Gymnastics for All GymFest. Elite finals for the USA Gymnastics Championships will take place at KFC Yum! Center.
The excitement culminates with the four-day U.S. Olympic Team Trials – Gymnastics, Friday, June 16 through Monday, June 19, when the nation’s top women’s and men’s gymnasts will vie for a coveted spot on the 2028 U.S. Olympic Team bound for Los Angeles. At the conclusion of competition, USA Gymnastics will announce the 2028 Olympic Teams for artistic, trampoline and rhythmic gymnastics live in front of a national and international audience.
“In 2028, the Olympic Games will take place in Los Angeles, but one of the most meaningful moments on that journey will happen right here in Louisville,” said USA Gymnastics President and CEO Kyle Albrecht. “This community understands how to host at the highest level, and we’re confident Louisville will deliver a world-class experience for athletes and fans alike.”
Gymnastics City USA has proven to be a powerful driver of visitation and economic impact. The 2024 event in Minneapolis welcomed approximately 200,000 visitors and generated nearly $75 million in economic impact, with social media coverage reaching a record 1.9 billion people.
For Louisville, the 2028 events will translate into full hotels, busy restaurants, energized attractions and national exposure during a 15-day celebration anchored in the city’s vibrant downtown core.
“Events of this scale don’t just fill seats—they fuel our entire visitor economy,” said Cleo Battle, President & CEO of Louisville Tourism. “Thousands of visitors will experience Louisville for the first time, exploring our neighborhoods, dining at local restaurants, visiting iconic attractions and discovering why our city consistently delivers unforgettable experiences. Gymnastics City USA 2028 gives us a global platform to tell Louisville’s story in an authentic and lasting way.”
Louisville’s selection builds on a deep-rooted sports tradition and a proven ability to host events on the world stage. From the Kentucky Derby, held annually since 1875, to NCAA championships, international sporting events and a growing professional soccer scene with Louisville City FC and Racing Louisville FC, the city has long blended competition with culture.
Visitors attending Gymnastics City USA 2028 will find more than elite athletic performance—they’ll discover bourbon distilleries, nationally acclaimed dining, historic neighborhoods, live music and cultural institutions like the Muhammad Ali Center, all within a walkable and welcoming downtown.
Governor Andy Beshear called the announcement “an incredible moment for Kentucky,” noting that athletes and fans will experience “the hospitality and excitement that have made our Commonwealth a global sports destination.”
Downtown Louisville will anchor the 15-day celebration, with Fourth Street Live! serving as a central hub for fan activations, live entertainment and community events surrounding competition at KFC Yum! Center and the Kentucky International Convention Center. Additional citywide programming will extend the experience into Louisville’s neighborhoods, creating a true citywide celebration that reflects local culture and pride.
“Gymnastics City USA 2028 will showcase not only the best gymnasts in the world, but also the spirit and energy of Louisville,” said Greg Fante, President & CEO of the Louisville Sports Commission. “Our community is ready to deliver an experience worthy of the Olympic journey.”
The 2028 Trials carry added significance as Los Angeles prepares to host the first Summer Olympic Games on U.S. soil since 1996. Members of the legendary “Magnificent Seven”—including Amanda Borden, Dominique Moceanu, Jaycie Phelps and Shannon Miller—were on hand for the announcement, underscoring the historic connection between Olympic legacy and the road ahead.
