Larger-Than-Life Mural Honors Greatest Of All Time

LOUISVILLE, Ky. (April 26, 2023) — A world-renowned artist is putting his mark on Louisville with a new mural of Muhammad Ali displayed at the Chestnut Street YMCA in the city’s Russell neighborhood. The seven-story mural on the side of the YMCA building was created by street artist Shepard Fairey, who has painted more than 120 large-scale murals across six continents, including designing the Barack Obama “Hope” poster for the 2008 US presidential election and the Obey Giant.

Fairey completed the multi-story mural of Ali in just four days, and the artwork now covers the east side of the Chestnut Street YMCA, just two blocks away from Ali's alma mater Central High School.

The image of the mural is based on a photograph taken by Ali’s personal photographer Howard L. Bingham. It also incorporates text based on his philosophies and role as the Messenger of Peace for the United Nations., including the famous Ali quote "Impossible is not a fact!"

Ali’s life and career were greatly impacted by Louisville and his legacy left a permanent mark on the city, including the Muhammad Ali Center, located on Museum Row in the heart of downtown Louisville. The Muhammad Ali Center is the only place in the world dedicated to preserving and promoting Ali’s legacy. The multicultural Ali Center, home to an award-winning museum, captures the inspiration of Muhammad Ali’s legendary life as an athlete, global humanitarian and cultural icon. Visitors can experience interactive multimedia exhibits, historical footage, artifacts, and art, and will discover Ali’s six core principles: Confidence, Conviction, Dedication, Giving, Respect, and Spirituality.

Although June 3 will mark the seventh year of Ali’s passing, his spirit is still very much alive in Louisville through the annual Ali Festival, a youth event celebrating his life journey and fierce perseverance as an example to all children. This year’s festival will run June 2-10 with further details to be announced soon at https://alicenter.org/ali-fest/.
