From Baryshnikov to The Barber of Seville: Louisville's Ballet and Opera Celebratory 75th Season Commence

LOUISVILLE, KY (September 3, 2026) — Visitors seeking extraordinary cultural experiences will find plenty to applaud in Louisville during the 2026-27 season as both Louisville Ballet and Kentucky Opera present landmark 75th anniversary seasons that showcase the city's rich artistic heritage and vibrant creative future.

The Louisville Ballet, America's fifth-oldest ballet company, celebrates its 75th season with a lineup that honors its legacy while embracing bold new artistic visions. Under the leadership of Artistic Director Anthony Krutzkamp, the season welcomes the return of dance legend Mikhail Baryshnikov and features a collection of productions designed to captivate audiences from across the region.

The anniversary season opens Halloween weekend with Frankenstein, an electrifying new production inspired by Mary Shelley's gothic masterpiece. The holiday season brings the return of The Brown-Forman Nutcracker to Whitney Hall, accompanied by live music from the Louisville Orchestra.

Spring highlights include Andrea Schermoly's dazzling, 1970s Las Vegas-inspired Carmen at the Brown Theatre and Bourbon & Ballet at Actors Theatre of Louisville, an intimate showcase of innovative new works created by Louisville Ballet's Company and Studio Company artists. The season concludes with Momentum, a dynamic triple bill featuring Alejandro Cerrudo's Extremely Close, Adam Hougland's K281 and a world premiere work created for the company's milestone year.

Also marking their diamond anniversary, Kentucky Opera's 2026-27 season marks an anticipated return to the historic Brown Theatre while presenting a compelling mix of beloved classics and innovative contemporary works. The season opens with Rossini's comedic masterpiece The Barber of Seville (Oct.9 & 11) before shifting to COTTON (Nov. 20-22), a powerful song cycle inspired by the photographic work of renowned visual artist John E. Dowell and featuring poetry from celebrated writers including Nikki Giovanni.

This spring, audiences can experience Mozart's Così fan tutte (March 18, 20-21) at the Kentucky Opera Center for Cultural Health before the season culminates with Strauss' groundbreaking Salome, presented in collaboration with the Louisville Orchestra at Whitney Hall. The production will feature internationally acclaimed soprano Jessica Faselt in the title role and be conducted by Louisville Orchestra Music Director Teddy Abrams.

Beyond its mainstage productions, Kentucky Opera will continue to produce the Louisville Juneteenth Jubilee Commission’s Annual Celebration and will offer numerous auxiliary events, including Evenings of Note at Oxmoor Farm (Sept. 26, 2026), SongWeek (Nov. 15 to 22, 2026), and A Holiday Cabaret (Dec. 11 to 13, 2026), as well as its regular scheduled Awakenings and Opera Café series. The company will also launch the Kentucky Opera Supper Club, a new no-host social series highlighting the extraordinary restaurant scene in Louisville and its ties to the season’s programs.
