How to spend a day in Louisville's NuLu neighborhood
Here's where to eat, shop and explore in one of Louisville's most vibrant districts.
Louisville's NuLu (East Market District) is located just east of downtown and is known for its vibrant local businesses, historic architecture and acclaimed restaurants. In 2026, NuLu was named one of the top 10 arts districts in the nation in the USA Today 10Best Readers' Choice Awards.
From beloved local favorites to hidden gems, this guide will help you spend the perfect day exploring one of Louisville's most vibrant neighborhoods.
Coffee
To start your day in NuLu, visit Goldie’s for classic and specialty drinks, including the popular Teddy Graham latte and seasonal offerings. If you’re craving something sweeter, stop by Please & Thank You, named the Best Cookie Shop by USA Today in 2023. Along with its well-known chocolate chip cookie, the shop offers plenty of caffeinated drinks. For a more filling breakfast, Biscuit Belly puts a playful twist on the classic biscuit with classic and creative options.
Walk the neighborhood
NuLu is known for its beautiful murals, public art and local boutiques. After grabbing your coffee, explore the block of shops, including vintage clothes from Saint Thaddeus Vintage or Really Good Vintage, local art at Revelry Boutique Gallery or get new decor at Red Tree.
Lunch
Stop at Feast BBQ, a casual NuLu favorite known for its smoked meats, scratch-made sides and a laid-back counter-service atmosphere. If you want more heat, try Royals Hot Chicken, known for their Nashville-style hot chicken with scratch sides, dipping sauces and milkshakes.
Get active
Whether you climb all the time or have never even thought about trying it, spend some time at Climb NuLu for a fun activity that adds something different to your day. For a more low-key activity, try Five Iron Golf. With different sports simulation rooms, you can play a round of golf, practice your swing or choose from a range of competitive games, no matter the weather.
Dinner
For dinner, travel back in time to 1950s Cuba at La Bodeguita de Mima. What started as one family’s dream has become a Louisville staple, known for its vibrant atmosphere, colorful decor and flavorful Cuban dishes. For an award-winning meal, visit MeeshMeesh Mediterranean, a 2025 James Beard-nominated restaurant with Levantine-inspired cuisine. For a Southern-inspired option, eat at LouLou on Market for Cajun-Creole favorites, live music and cocktails.
Grab a drink
End the day with a glass of wine at Nouvelle Bar & Bottle, which serves more than 40 varieties. With small bites, a gorgeous interior and a large outdoor patio, it’s a stylish spot to unwind. For a more casual place to relax with a drink, try Garage Bar, a former service garage that’s now a laid-back spot to catch a game or grab a table with friends.
Where to stay
Rest and recharge after a full day of exploring NuLu with a stay at Hotel Genevieve. This stylish boutique hotel is deeply connected to Louisville’s culture and has earned national recognition as a Michelin One-Key Hotel. Guests can keep the evening going without leaving the property, with a rooftop restaurant overlooking Louisville, Bar Genevieve and Jimmy Can’t Dance, a speakeasy offering cocktails and live jazz or start your day with a quick snack and coffee at Mini Marche.
