Louisville is home to America’s oldest and largest African American owned fine art gallery
Since 1989, E&S has been curating art that you’ll want to come see yourself.
Located in downtown Louisville at 108 S. 10th St., E&S Gallery is the nation's oldest and largest African American-owned and -operated fine art and custom framing gallery. Visitors can wander three floors filled with African American art, including works by Jacob Lawrence and Richard Mayhew.
Founded in 1989 by Walter Shannon, E&S is now operated by Shannon and his wife, Cathy. It has grown into an 11,000-square-foot gallery, custom framing studio and publishing company.
Spanning three floors, the gallery feels more like a museum, showcasing paintings and sculptures by emerging artists alongside works by established figures.
With a focus on African American art and experiences, there's something new to discover around every corner.
The gallery has been featured in magazines and national exhibitions, and its artwork is part of private collections, including those of Muhammad Ali.

E&S Gallery is open from 10 a.m. to 6 p.m. Tuesday through Friday and from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday.
