Get to know a Revolutionary War Spy named James Armistead Lafayette!

On Sunday, August 25, 2024, at 2:00 p.m. at Oxmoor Farm, a reenactor from Colonial Williamsburg named Stephen Seals will portray James Armistead Lafayette, a dual spy in the American Revolution who was assigned to the Marquis de Lafayette.

The Lafayette Bicentennial is upon us. In 1824, the Marquis de Lafayette, the only living major-general from the Revolution, returned to America at President Monroe's invitation.

The Louisville/Jeffersonville American Friends Bicentennial Committee is making plans to CELEBRATE, COMMEMORATE, and EDUCATE the public about the Marquis and his role in the American Revolution and to commemorate his visit to Louisville and Jeffersonville as part of his 13-month, 24-state, 6,000-mile tour.

The presentation at Oxmoor Farm tells the story of James Armistead, an enslaved African-American who volunteered for our cause but was not released from slavery by a quirk of fate. When Lafayette discovered that James Armistead was still enslaved, he wrote a letter to Congress requesting his freedom. He was released and took Lafayette’s last name. Years later, they met again when Lafayette returned to America in 1824.

Come hear this live history presentation, which will take place in the magnificent library at historic Oxmoor Farm, located at 720 Oxmoor Ave, Louisville, KY. Tickets are $65 a person.
