Ryder Cup victory proves it’s possible in Louisville
-
Team USA defeated Team Europe
with a united and spirited performance that gave the red, white and blue a Ryder
Cup win for the first time in nine years. Captain Paul Azinger rallied the
US team with a week of team-building in Louisville, including meeting hometown
legend Muhammad Ali, and drew on crowd support from a dedicated Kentucky fan base
for two home state players to rally what he called the "13th man." The
Bureau entertained clients at Valhalla Golf Club, and at various venues throughout the weekend.
Guests from the Pumper and Cleaner Environmental Expo were guests of the Bureau
and are pictured at Valhalla. They are (l to r); Jerry Dahl; Julie Gensler; Bob
Kendall; Angi Van Berg, Louisville Bureau; and Bruce Bisnette.
Despite 300,000 homes left without power after the remnants of
Hurricane Ike blew into the city, just as the European team arrived, the city
proved its determination to host an international event with grit and grace. PGA
officials, international fans and the golfers themselves raved about the hospitality
shown by Valhalla, the city of Louisville and the Commonwealth of Kentucky. "I
love this town and I love this state, and I couldn't think of a better place for us to be," Azinger said.
Much like the community celebration that welcomes the
Kentucky Derby each year, Louisville even hosted a public slate of events in anticipation
of the Ryder Cup. Among the activities that were open to all visitors, fans
were treated to the first-ever pre-Ryder Cup pep rally Thursday night in the city's
main entertainment corridor, Fourth Street Live! The entire team showed up with
Captain Azinger and Mayor Abramson to energize the fan base that would help carry
the team to an American victory. Also on Thursday night, the Bureau hosted a party
for Ryder Cup guests at Lucky Strike at Fourth Street Live! Pictured (l to r)
are: Susan Sauer, Bureau; Sue Olson and Jeff Olson, American Legion. Joyce Howlett, Bureau; Bob Henry, Reliv; Jackie Wolfe and Lawson Hockman, IMN Solutions also attended.
Louisville's Sister
City, Leeds, was the site of the first European Ryder Cup in 1929. A delegation
from Leeds brought more than 30 historic photos, a replica of the 1929 Ryder Cup
Commemoration Cup and a 1929 Grand Gala menu to the Louisville Visitors Center
for display during the Ryder Cup play. Bureau President & CEO Jim Wood (second
from left) and Louisville Mayor Jerry Abramson (fourth from left) are pictured
with the delegation at the Visitors Center.
In
Louisville during the Ryder Cup:
-
8,000 international guests were welcomed
-
More than 250 corporations showcased Valhalla and city attractions and dining to clients
-
40,000 guests per day witnessed world-class golf in a world-class facility
-
$120 million in economic impact was generated
-
1,600 media were hosted and enjoyed a taste of Bourbon Country
Louisville rolled out the red carpet for the Ryder Cup and we
can do it for your event or meeting. Visit us at www.gotolouisville.com or call 1-800-626-5646 to book your next success in Possibility City.
