Convention Development

  • July 27-August 1, Karen Williams and Joyce Howlett will attend the Meeting Professionals International (MPI) World Education Congress in Montreal.

  • July 31, Yvonne Board will meet with the National Baptist Convention USA local host committee to discuss the upcoming 2008 Convention. 

  • August 1, Mark Barnes will attend the International Association of Exhibition and Events Washington D.C. Chapter luncheon (formerly International Association for Exhibition Managers) in Washington. 

  • August 2, Joyce Howlett will meet with the Southeastern Shrine Association’s local representatives to work on a presentation for Louisville to host its 2011 Annual Convention.  The conference would generate 4,170 room nights and an economic impact of nearly $2 million.

  • August 3, Mark Barnes will attend the HelmsBriscoe D.C. regional meeting in Washington. 

  • Lisa LeCompte and Aaron Baer participated in the Council for Engineering and Scientific Society Executives Annual Conference July 17-20 in Halifax, Nova Scotia.  The Bureau sponsored the lunch on Wednesday which included a Derby theme. Pictured (l to r) are; Diane Reiff, Galt House Hotel & Suites; Karen Napier, Louisville Marriott Downtown; Lisa LeCompte and Aaron Baer, Convention Bureau.


Tourism Development

  • July 30, Nicole Twigg and Kate Amara assisted the Galt House in greeting a total of 38 motorcoaches for the Carl Hurley Cavalcade of Comedy.  Nine of the motorcoaches will stay in Louisville three days or more.  The Bureau will also have a table set-up for motorcoach guests attending the show to receive more information about things to see and do in Louisville.

  • July 30-31, Gayla Schaftlein will make sales calls to local and regional AAA offices.  Gayla will visit with staff at nine AAA's in Louisville, Lexington and Frankfort presenting information that will help these offices direct more individual leisure travelers to Louisville.

  • Sullivan University is hosting the First Interactive Culinary Council Symposium for the International Caterers Association (ICA) from Sunday, July 29 through Wednesday, August 1.  Approximately 112 ICA chefs and board members will attend.  The Tourism Department supplied "Welcome Bags" for the group.  Each delegate was given a bag when they registered.  On Sunday evening, Gayla Schaftlein, Kate Amara, and Barbara Hewitt attended the Opening Reception at Winston's.

  • July 30-31, ICA will tour Woodford Reserve.  Gayla Schaftlein and Barbara Hewitt will be there to greet them and talk about Bourbon Country.  The chefs will receive a Bourbon Country map and shot glass from the Tourism Department.  Pictured at Woodford Reserve Distillery are (l to r):  Gayla Schaftlein and  Barbara Hewitt, Bureau; Chef David Larson, chef at Woodford Reserve; Dave Scheurich, Woodford Reserve master distiller; and Greg Bess, ICA member and president of Melange Catering & Special Events in Houston.

Bureau Services

  • July 30, Rita Edmonds attended a pre-convention meeting for Adventist-Laymen's Services & Industries (ASI).

  • July 30, Cinnamon Jawor conducted a pre-convention meeting with the Fraternal Order of Police Local Host Committee.  She reviewed shuttle, special events and general logistics.

  • The Bureau, along with the Kentucky Exposition Center & Centerplate, is sponsoring a Ladies Tea on Thursday, August 2, from 1:00-2:30 p.m. for the National Street Rod AssociationThe Tea is being coordinated by the Services "Interns" Jessica Dillree and Heather Crabtree.

Groups working with services this week:

  • National Street Rod Association, 2007 Street Rod Nationals is meeting at the Kentucky Exposition Center.  30,000 attendees are expected to attend, generating an economic impact of over $16 million.  On Wednesday, August 1, a news conference and parade will be held to welcome the group back to Louisville.  A parade of street rods will leave Papa John's Cardinal Stadium at 10:30 a.m. and travel down Fourth Street to Fourth Street Live! where the news conference will be held at 11 a.m.  The cars will remain on display at Fourth Street Live! throughout the lunch hour.  The Bureau will provide an onsite city concierge at Papa John's Cardinal Stadium (where registration takes place) from Wednesday through Friday.

  • Adventist-Laymen's Services & Industries, 2007 ASI International Convention is meeting at the Kentucky International Convention Center.  3,000 attendees are expected, generating an economic impact of nearly $3 million.  The Bureau will provide an onsite city concierge at KICC’s Riverside Lobby from Wednesday through Friday.
