Rockin’ Good Time in Louisville - Mystery Trip
2 Day/1 Night
Day One
- KentuckyShow!: A multi-sensory experience that tells a beautiful story about the rich history of Kentucky. This show offers a Kentucky 101 for people who are visiting for the first time. For those who have been to Kentucky before, this show offers a reminder of why the state is so special. The imagery is stunning and sounds are comforting. KentuckyShow! is narrated by Ashley Judd, a Kentucky native.
- Lunch at Lynn’s Paradise Café: Have you ever been to a place where you just couldn’t stop staring? Lynn’s Paradise Café is just such a place. The décor will delight your eyes, while the food will have your mouth watering. Lynn’s offers Southern comfort food with a twist. From the bourbon ball milkshake to Lynn’s Paradise Burger, you will not go away hungry! Esquire chose Lynn’s as one of the four most fun restaurants in America.
- Louisville Mega Cavern: Once an urban legend, the Louisville Mega Cavern is now a reality. This manmade cavern was once a limestone pit mine that eventually lost mineral rights. For the past 50 years, this space has served many purposes. Most notably, it was the largest civil defense shelter to be used in the event of a nuclear disaster during the Cuban Missile Crisis. Now, years later, this mine has been turned into a one of a kind attraction. Your group will take a Jeep-driven tram through 17 miles of underground caverns and learn about the history of the cavern. Temperature is always 58°, so a light jacket is needed.
- Schimpff’s Confectionery: From the first moment you walk in the door, your nose is entranced by the delightful smells of fresh chocolate and the spicy richness of cinnamon. Your group will meet the owners, Jill and Warren Schimpff, and see a candymaking demonstration that will have you begging for a taste. Schimpff’s has been featured on the History Channel’s Modern Marvels, as they still use turn-of-the-century equipment to churn out their beloved Red Hots.
- Falls of the Ohio: Why does Louisville exist? This state park offers insight into Louisville’s natural history and why Louisville’s location is so special. The rocky outcropping at the river just below the falls tells the story, which takes place over millions of years. Your group will be guided through this history and will have the opportunity (depending on the river’s level) to actually step on the largest exposed fossil bed in the world. The Falls of the Ohio State Park’s Interpretive Center also displays many historical artifacts. Back to the hotel to freshen up
- Derby Dinner Playhouse: Sit back, relax and enjoy the show as Derby Dinner Playhouse puts on a professional Broadway-style production of comedy, music or mystery along with a delicious Southern buffet dinner.
- Overnight in Louisville accommodations
Day Two
- Breakfast at hotel
- GhostTour of Old Louisville: Often called the original Sin City, Old Louisville offers stories of love on the rocks, money and fame won and lost, and a collection of architecture that will wow you. Secrets hide within Old Louisville, as do the spirits that refuse to vacate the homes. Your group will experience a narrated tour through Louisville’s first suburb and end up at one of its most opulent mansions, and perhaps discover that they have picked up an extra passenger or two. Visit the Conrad-Caldwell House and meet the resident Old Louisville ghost, Mr. Dupont. Listen in to the tawdry details of the affair that ended in his untimely death.
- Make your way to Main Street via Fourth Street. Once the heart of downtown life and shopping, Fourth Street has been revitalized to encourage visitors back downtown for dining and nightlife. Also, as you head towards the river, you will notice two historic hotels, the Brown and the Seelbach. The Brown claims the fame of the invention of the Hot Brown, a tasty open faced turkey sandwich, and the Seelbach which was an inspiration to F. Scott Fitzgerald and gained a mention in The Great Gatsby.
- Lunch at Bristol Bar & Grille: The Bristol offers your group a true Louisville original dining experience. They use many local products to provide the freshest Kentucky-inspired dishes. Here, you can try a Hot Brown, or one of the Bristol’s most popular dishes, Theresa’s Sweet Chili Linguine.
- Frazier History Museum: A walk through the Frazier Museum is a journey through time and across continents! Come face to face with some of the people and stories that changed the world forever, including famous politicians, celebrities, frontiersmen, soldiers, knights and kings. History comes to life through ever-changing and interactive temporary exhibits that often feature local history, as well as fascinating and one-of-a-kind permanent galleries. The Frazier is the only place in the world outside Great Britain to permanently display Royal Armouries artifacts. When you visit, be sure to check out a performance by a costumed interpreter-- you just might meet Annie Oakley or Buffalo Bill or even watch a sword fight!
- Museum Gift Shop Hop: While at Frazier, make sure you explore their wonderful gift shop. You never know what you could find: pearls modeled after Jackie Kennedy, swords like the noble Knights of the Round Table used, and more! Just across the street, your group will find the Louisville Slugger Museum & Factory gift shop where you can get your very own personalized baseball bats while you wait. Your grandkids would love to have their very own baseball jersey or maybe even a baseball-themed puzzle. Then, on to Glassworks, just around the corner. Their gift shop is filled with beautiful works of art, including jewelry, vases, lamp shades, and more. All of these shops are within one block of each other, and can be easily walked to without getting back on the bus.
